Fun facts

1

Barsboldia had very long, club-like neural spines on its front tail bones, which made its tail heavier than most other duck-billed dinosaurs.1

2

Its tail was held horizontally off the ground while it walked, like a balancing pole.2

3

Barsboldia is known from only one incomplete skeleton, found by a Polish-Mongolian expedition in 1970.2

4

It was first thought to be a different dinosaur called Saurolophus angustirostris, but later scientists realized it was a new species.2

5

Barsboldia lived about 72 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.4

Most asked questions about Barsboldia

?How big was Barsboldia?

It was a large dinosaur, possibly 12 to 14 metres long and weighing about 5 metric tons.3

?What did Barsboldia eat?

It was a herbivore that ate plants, using hundreds of teeth to grind its food.3

?Did Barsboldia have a crest?

Nobody knows for sure because no skull has been found. If it was a lambeosaurine, it would have had a hollow crest on its head.3

?When did Barsboldia live?

It lived about 72 to 66 million years ago, during the Late Cretaceous period.3

?Why is it called Barsboldia?

It is named after the Mongolian paleontologist Rinchen Barsbold, meaning 'of Barsbold'.3

?Is Barsboldia a dinosaur?

Yes, it is a duck-billed dinosaur called a hadrosaurid.3

Barsboldia was named in 1981 by Teresa Maryańska and Halszka Osmólska. They based it on a partial skeleton found in the Nemegt Formation of Mongolia.41
Still debated
Scientists are not sure whether Barsboldia belongs to the lambeosaurine group or the saurolophine group of duck-billed dinosaurs.4
