Glyptodontopelta
Glyptodontopelta was a slow, tank-like dinosaur covered in bony armor. It lived in what is now New Mexico, USA, during the very end of the Age of Dinosaurs. This plant-eater used its tough shield to protect itself from hungry predators.14

Fun facts
Glyptodontopelta is known mostly from its bony armor plates, called osteoderms. The most complete specimen includes over a hundred of these plates.1
Its name means 'Glyptodon shield' because its armor reminded scientists of the giant armadillo-like mammal Glyptodon.1
This dinosaur lived about 69 to 66 million years ago, right before the big extinction that killed most dinosaurs.1
For a while, some scientists thought Glyptodontopelta might be a fake name (nomen dubium), but later studies showed its armor is unique enough to be a real dinosaur.1
Another armored dinosaur from New Mexico, Edmontonia australis, is now considered the same animal as Glyptodontopelta.1

Most asked questions about Glyptodontopelta
?How big was Glyptodontopelta?
Scientists are not sure of its exact size because only its armor and a few bones have been found. It was probably about 5 metres (16 feet) long, like other nodosaurids.14
?What did Glyptodontopelta eat?
It was a plant-eater. Its leaf-shaped teeth helped it chew tough plants.14
?When did Glyptodontopelta live?
It lived about 69 to 66 million years ago, during the very end of the Age of Dinosaurs.1
