Iaceornis lived about 83.5 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period.1
Only one fossil of Iaceornis has ever been found, and it is a partial skeleton without a skull.1
For over 120 years, scientists thought this fossil belonged to another bird called Apatornis. In 2004, paleontologist Julia Clarke proved it was a different species.1
The name Iaceornis means 'neglected bird' because the fossil was ignored for so long.1
Iaceornis is more advanced than the toothed bird Ichthyornis but less advanced than modern birds.1
The fossil was first dug up by famous fossil hunter Othniel Charles Marsh in 1877.1
