Abavornis
Abavornis was a tiny, primitive bird that lived alongside the dinosaurs. It had feathers and flew through the forests of ancient Uzbekistan. Only a single broken shoulder bone has been found, so it is a bit of a mystery bird.1

Abavornis is known from just one broken shoulder bone, called a coracoid.1
It lived about 92 million years ago during the Turonian age of the Late Cretaceous.1
Scientists think Abavornis was an enantiornithine, a group of primitive birds that had teeth and claws on their wings.1
This bird was named after the famous Argentine paleontologist José Bonaparte.1
A second, very similar shoulder bone has been found, but it might belong to the same species.1

- Abavornis was named by Russian paleontologist Andrey V. Panteleyev in 1998. The fossil was found in the Bissekty Formation of the Kyzylkum Desert in Uzbekistan.1

- Because only a single bone has been found, scientists are not completely sure that Abavornis really is a distinct kind of bird. It might turn out to be the same as another enantiornithine.1
