Georgiasaurus was a plesiosaur, a marine reptile that lived in the sea during the time of dinosaurs. It had a long neck and four flippers to swim after fish. This predator grew as long as a small bus!1

The first name for this animal was Georgia, but that name was already used for a snake, so scientists changed it to Georgiasaurus.1
The only known fossil is a complete skeleton, but it was damaged when workers cut the stone it was in.1
Georgiasaurus lived about 85 to 83 million years ago, during the Santonian stage of the Late Cretaceous.2
It belonged to a group of plesiosaurs called polycotylids, which were fast swimmers.1
The name honors Georgy Otschev, the father of the scientist who described it.1

- Russian paleontologist V. A. Otschev named the animal Georgia in 1976, based on a skeleton found near Zatolokino. In 1977 the name was changed to Georgiasaurus because Georgia was already taken.1
